The desire to renovate a carpenter’s house near Ljubljana had been present for a long time; a few years ago, this desire turned into a necessity and a decision. Changing needs opened the way for transformation — a reconsideration of the floor plan, of the spatial concept, of how a house that carries the memory of artisanal knowledge can once again come to life in a contemporary rhythm.
With the renovation of the interior came a reflection on the suitability of the existing layout. Over the years, it also became clear that the children would soon be leaving the family nest. The needs and wishes of the family, or rather the parents, had changed as they entered the autumn of their lives. As a result, spatial density loosened, certain functions shifted, and the house gained a more fluid yet thoughtful sequence of spaces, bringing a new sense of lightness to family life.
The project is characterized by rich material textures and precise carpentry work that tells a story of handcraft and patience. Among the unique details are semicircular niches with shelves and lighting accents, a firewood stand with utilitarian elegance, lively rhythms of handles, terracotta highlights, and carefully balanced compositions of volumes and voids.
The removal of a wall made it possible to place a double-sided storage volume that serves both the entrance area and the spacious kitchen. This move relieved the once narrow entry hall, which now flows seamlessly into the rest of the house. The wooden volume established a design language of placing masses along and between structural elements — a language developed consistently throughout the plan.
Storage surfaces are therefore pushed to the edges of the rooms, opening bright and flowing axes of movement. Where the construction interrupts the continuity of volumes, small architectural scenes emerge: a dialogue between old and new, between revealing and concealing. Different functions of the volumes are indicated either through texture changes or by subtle transitions in color. By consistently following proportions and carefully coordinating details, the interior never slips into visual saturation. Vertical texture appears as a recognizable thread throughout all spaces, occasionally interrupted by soft semicircular cuts — appearing as cavities for illuminated objects, as glazed cabinet openings, or as mirror surfaces.
Every architectural project is the result of close collaboration — between client, designer, and contractor. In this case, the client also acted as the main contractor, creating a remarkably rare symbiosis in the process. This enabled a relaxed, creative, and intimately detailed exploration, allowing for elements that too often remain unrealized to finally find shape, material, and — their space, their home.
Summary:
Autumn is a renovation project of a carpenter’s family home near Ljubljana. The family’s changing needs, as they enter a new stage of life, inspired a rethinking of the layout to create a more fluid and light living environment. Central to the design are precise carpentry details, rich textures, and unique elements such as semicircular niches, a double-sided wooden storage volume, and subtle terracotta accents. Storage solutions are positioned along the edges of the rooms, opening bright movement axes and forming a dialogue between old and new. A key feature of the project is its rare synergy: the client was also the contractor, enabling a creative realization of details that too often remain only as drawings.
